Do I need a car?
Yes. ASCUE veterans recommend that you'll need a car for the conference.
Although all of the conference-specific activities are on site at Ocean Creek Resort or provide bus service to an off-site locations (so you won't need your own transportation for those), the nearest full-service grocery stores are not within walking distance of your living unit at Ocean Creek, nor are the various beach supply stores, shopping malls and most restaurants.
What should I wear?
Just how casual is casual attire at ASCUE? ASCUE and Ocean Creek encourage a welcome atmosphere where the defining factor of your clothing should be that of comfort.
Conference participants are welcome (and encouraged!) to wear casual slacks or dresses, shorts, comfortable shoes, sandals or sneakers. ...Whatever you feel most comfortable wearing is appropriate for the ASCUE conference.
One piece of advice: The air conditioning in Water Oaks Center is chilly (sometimes cold!). A light sweater is a must.
What should I bring to stay at Ocean Creek?
All of the residences at Ocean Creek are furnished and provide bed & bath linens, TV, onsite laundry facilities and a full kitchen with cooking equipment & tableware so you can prepare your own meals. In addition to items that you typically pack for a week-long trip, here are some to consider that will help until you've had time to visit local stores to stock up for your stay:
- Sunscreen (especially for the kids!)
- Beach towel, swimming suit and sandals/sneakers
- Ground coffee and coffee filters (there is a coffee pot in the kitchen, but no filters)
- Travel mug for coffee and a light jacket or sweater for taking a sunrise walk on the beach (early morning ocean breezes can be chilly)
- Breakfast food for the first morning of your visit
- Snack food (vending machines at the resort may not have your favorites)
- Travel alarm clock (most Ocean creek units provide one, but not all of them)
What are the dining options in the area?
In addition to fixing meals in your Ocean Creek living unit, you will want to sample the diverse dining options in the Myrtle Beach ...from fast food to fine restaurants, American to international. The closest restaurants are at nearby Barefoot Landing (you can even walk there if you feel brave enough to traverse Highway 17), but many other choices are available. Ask one of the veteran ASCUE board members about his or her local favorites.
Can I bring my family?
Ocean Creek is a wonderful place for families! Besides being just a short walk or tram ride to the beach, it offers an oceanfront beach club, indoor & outdoor pools, volleyball, a playground, tennis courts, and putting green.
You can rent large umbrellas for the beach that are useful if you have children or plan to spend long days there. The resort doesn't provide beach towels or other beach furniture, though, so you'll need to bring them from home or pick them up from one of the nearby beach supply stores.
Outside of the resort, there are many local attractions in Myrtle Beach for families. Information and brochures are available at the Ocean Creek check-in desk.
Will I have time to see the beach?
Absolutely!
There is always plenty of "sun time" after the conference meetings are
finished each day to spend at the beach with family & friends.
For early risers, early morning before sessions is a lovely time to enjoy the sunrise, take a jog or have a quiet cup of coffee at the beach.
